Upcoming PHLA Events

Dear Partner for Health Literacy,
There are two upcoming events that the Partnership for Health Literacy in Arkansas would like you to be aware of. First, the Arkansas Public Health Association will have its Annual Meeting next week May 8-10 at the Hot Springs Convention Center. On site registration will open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Wednesday. The cost is $50 for one day or $70.00 for all three days for APHA members, more for non-members. APHA membership is $26 per year. More information is available at the APHA website: http://www.arkpublichealth.org/.

The Partnership will be sponsoring two concurrent sessions this year.

  • “Using Plain Language to Improve Communication with Minority Groups about Cancer” will be presented 8:30-9:45 am by Gail Lowery, Executive Director of the Arkansas Cancer Coalition. This sessions is co-sponsored with the Health Disparities Section. This session will draw on Gail’s expertise in Plain Language, which she gained while working at the National Cancer Institute.
  • “Health Literacy Training Program for the Arkansas Department of Health” will be presented 1:30-2:45 pm by Cathy Irwin, PhD, RN, with the UAMS Center for Rural Health, and Sherian Kwanisai, APN, with the Arkansas Dept. of Health, Center for Local Public Health. This session will provide an overview of Health Literacy training being planned for ADH Local Health Units that is based on the Health Literacy Universal Precautions Toolkits.

A Lunchtime Gathering is also planned for Partnership members and anyone interested in health literacy. We will gather near the APHA registration table at 11:30 am to walk to a nearby restaurant.

Second, the Partnership for Health Literacy in Arkansas will have its annual General Membership & Business Meeting on Friday, June 21, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. The meeting will be in Room 906 of the Freeway Medical Tower, located at 5800 West 10th Street, Little Rock, 72204. Video-teleconferencing will be available.

The Agenda for the meeting will include

  • Election of Officers
  • Reports from the PHLA Workgroups and other partners
  • Introduction and develop of the Arkansas Health Literacy State Plan
  • Awards to key partners

We will also unveil exciting plans for reporting activities and success stories of Arkansas health literacy activities on our new website. This meeting will be an excellent opportunity to get connected with what’s going on with Health Literacy in Arkansas. There is no cost to attend, of course, but registration is encouraged. Look for a registration link on our website in the very near future. www.phla.net.

Finally let me say, how exciting it is to be part of health literacy in Arkansas. We are gaining national recognition for the outstanding work we are doing here. It will make you really proud.

Please helps us get the word out and share this information with anyone who may be interested.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Dillaha, MD
